About Allan Gardens Conservatory, Toronto, Ontario, Canada

Allan Gardens Conservatory is situated on the land donated to Toronto Horticultural Society by George William Allan in 1858. City of Toronto took over the Conservatory when the society was in debt in 1888. In 1902, a fire destroyed the 1879 built Horticultural Pavilion. The Palm house, designed by City Architect, Robert McCallum was completed in 1910. In later years, additional green houses were added to the structure. Univeristy of Toronto Research Greenhouse was relocated to Allan Gardens in 2004. Now there are six interconnected greenhouses, with a total area of approximately 16,000 sq feet.

1. Explore the conservatory through its different sections that houses the water wheel and plants like Orchids, Cacti and succulents, and the main (central) Palm House filled with Plantains and pines intermingled with seasonal flowers. Learn the names of exotic plants from all the over the world.

The six greenhouses include the historic, glass domed Palm House with Palms, Banana and pine; Tropical Landscape House that is home to the oft photographed Jade vine, cycads and other tropical plants; Arid House displays cacti and succulents; Cool Temperate House has Citrus trees, small pond and plants requiring a cool, environment; the two tropical houses have bromeliads, orchids and begonias.

2. Enjoy the seasonal shows in Spring,Easter, Fall and Christmas.

3. Children can participate in the horticultural programs held in the Allan Gardens Children’s Conservatory.

4. There is also a small play area with swings for children and two fenced in off leash area on the Allan Garden grounds.

Who will enjoy the attraction the best?

Everybody will enjoy this green house with its quaint bridges and beautifully arranged exotic plants. Children will also love spotting the orange coloured fishes in the pond, and the small turtles in the water wheel pond. Allan Garden grounds is also home to a variety of squirrels and doves.
