About the University of Alberta Observatory

The observatory is operated by the Department of Physics at the University of Alberta. It is located on the roof of the Centennial Centre for Interdisciplinary Science (CCIS).

It houses a collection of telescopes that are available during public observing sessions.It is also home to the Devon Telescope, a 20-inch Cassegrian telescope that was manufactured and constructed in the machine shop in the Department of Physics at the University. It is now used for undergraduate research projects.

What to do at the University of Alberta Observatory?

 
The observatory provides free outreach activities for the public through our regular free observing hours as well as special visits for school groups and other education-oriented groups.

Visit the observatory during the public hours to explore the universe and unravel the mysteries of the night sky. Participate in the free public lectures during the evening observing hours.

School groups and other education-oriented groups can book a private visit. These visits are free of charge. Please contact us at least one month before your anticipated visit date since there is high demand for these visits and we have limited availability.

How much will it cost to visit?

Its free!

There is no entry fee for the observatory, so come along and explore the universe.

When to visit the University of Alberta Observatory?

University of Alberta Observatory Public Hours

Open on Thursdays for solar observing between 12:00 PM – 1:00 PM, and evening observing (times vary).

Evening Observing Hours – Thursdays during University term time.

September: 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM
October: 8:00 PM – 09:00 PM
November – February : 7:00 PM – 08:00 PM
March: 8:00 PM – 09:00 PM
April: 9:00 PM – 10:00 PM

How to get to the University of Alberta Observatory?

University of Alberta Observatory location & directions

Located in North (main) Campus, we are centrally located.

If travelling by car, follow road signs to “University” and this will direct you to the correct campus. It is also easy to reach by public transit. Take any transit that terminates at “University”, or exit the LRT at “University Station”.

Once on campus, head for the Centennial Centre for Interdiciplinary Science (CCIS), located at the North end of the Quad. The Observatory is located in the West ends of the 5th Floor. Directions.

Parking is available on campus.

What about amenities, and access University of Alberta Observatory?

Guided Tours, public lectures, restrooms.

Accessibility

Wheelchair access is available to the observatory classroom and the roof area, but no access is available into the domes. Telescope are set up on the roof area during each event, allowing all to take advantage.
