What a difference a day makes. For that matter, what a difference a year, an hour, a minute, and a second make in one’s life and in our world. The earth rotates from one day to the next; lives start and diminish; viruses mutate; attitudes, thoughts, and feelings come and go with the passage of time. Over the past year, as the world has experienced a global pandemic, we as artists have become more aware of the passage of time and of the changes and differences that occur within time.

The G9 (Group of Nine) artists work independently, but because of Covid-19 we are working in isolation more than ever before. We emotionally and intuitively respond to differences that occur due to time, changes in climate, our personal feelings, and political and medical circumstances. These elements are interpreted and filtered through our individual perspectives to create two-dimensional images and three-dimensional forms.

No longer able to meet in person, G9 is meeting the challenges of being a positive group of artist friends by meeting virtually. Besides serious discussion of artistic practice, we take the time to laugh in light moments. Our art remains an affirmation of life and of the necessity to keep positive and creative during challenging and even threatening times. Our artwork is a visual statement of certainty in uncertain times.

About G9:
Group Nine was formed in 2016 by nine visual artists to provide a forum for artistic, conceptual and philosophical dialogue on current issues in contemporary visual culture in Canada and around the globe. Our concerns are visually articulated and addressed through a series of regular art exhibitions and publication projects. We are from a diverse spectrum of experiences and differ in background, age and practice. As artists we embrace our diversity through our creative strength and find unity in the belief that we interpret the world through differing lenses to enrich the quality of human experience.
