The Calgary JCC is pleased to present Purim à la Klezmer, a concert by the Calgary JCC Community Klezmer Band. In occasion of the upcoming Jewish holiday called Purim, it is traditional to celebrate this day with music, dancing and spirited drinks.
Klezmer is Yiddish music, the music of the Jews of Central and Eastern Europe, played by professional musicians called klezmorim. The genre originally consisted largely of dance tunes and instrumental pieces for weddings and other happy celebrations.
The conductor of this professional and recreational 16 piece band, Frank Rackow, is also the founding member of Calgary’s KlezMerovitz band, The Black Sea and Vocal Latitudes, a world music community choir in Calgary.
The show will begin with an opening act by local comedian Yenta (Joy Feldman) and then continue with music and dances led by Leslie Gotfrit, a professional dance caller.
There will also be on display an exhibition about the Klezmer music genre, as well as an explanation and history of the Jewish celebration called Purim.
