This first concert of the 2019 – 2020 Calgary Civic Symphony season will once again showcase the outstanding local talent of internationally recognized Calgary pianist (and periodontist) Thomas Yu as he joins the orchestra in presenting Rachmaninoff’s challenging and exciting Piano Concerto No. 3.
Thomas Yu is one of the most recognized amateur musicians in the world. He has redefined what it means to be an amateur pianist, having performed with the BBC Orchestra of Wales, Toronto Symphony Orchestra, Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra, and the Calgary Philharmonic Orchestra. He has appeared as a guest soloist at Berliner Philharmonie, Carnegie Hall, Munich Gasteig, BBC Hoddinott Hall, Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris, Symphony Hall in Chicago, Hakuju Hall in Tokyo, as well as Roy Thomson Hall, National Arts Centre and Glenn Gould Studio in Canada. He continues to delight audiences across four continents while maintaining a full-time career as a periodontist.
The Civic opens its 2019 – 2020 season with Shine on Sunday, November 3rd at 2:30 pm at the Jack Singer Concert Hall. A pre-concert “chat” will commence at 1:45 pm.
Maestro Rolf Bertsch conducts the Civic as we launch the concert performing Canadian Composer Alain Trudel’s Birth, followed by Antonin Dvorak’s Symphony No. 8. After our brief intermission, the concert will be brought to a rousing close with Thomas Yu and Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 3.
The Calgary Civic Symphony was founded in 1975 as Calgary’s volunteer orchestra. Over the years, the Civic has swelled to over 80 musicians. With an interesting diversity in professions, its members come together each week to rehearse complex orchestral works. Under the baton of Artistic Director and Conductor Rolf Bertsch, the Symphony shapes and polishes performances that are truly brilliant!
