Events Description

The Edmonton Japanese Community Association (EJCA) is a non-profit organization serving the Japanese Canadian community and anyone who has an interest in Japanese culture in the Edmonton area.

Come and join us in celebrating Doll’s festival!
This is a great opportunity to try on a kimono and take a selfie with Hina dolls. We also will offer matcha and Japanese pastries. Hina-matsuri is a seasonal festival that takes place in March in Japan. Traditionally, we pray for the health and happiness of girls. Households with daugthers/girls display dolls in dressed in ancient court costumes called, “hina-ningyo” on a step-like platform called a, “hinadan.” Girls dress up in beautiful kimono and cereblate the festival. We eat foods such as chirashi zushi, clam soup, mochi and snacks called “hina arare” for good luck. In addition to eating, we also drink a sweet rice wine called, “amazake.”
