Events Description

Two-time JUNO winner Jayme Stone is a composer, banjoist, instigator, producer, and educator. As a banjoist, Jayme is fascinated by both traditional players and modern masters; an Ali Farka Touré song to free-improvised music. He is interested in the “heart and guts” of what he hears—the warmth and grit of folk songs, the camaraderie and risk in jazz, the dynamics of chamber music, the cyclical rhythms of West Africa—and has created a style from all those influences and the music he hears in his head. He is always searching for sounds in all corners of the world to see how they’ll land in his musical universe. That’s why his songs feel a bit like aural travelogues. Jayme has been called “a musical evangelist” who “loves using fresh approaches that get people hooked on wider musical traditions” (Roger Levesque, Edmonton Journal).

Guided by his own aesthetic compass and a desire to let his collaborators “make the sounds that only they know how to make”, he has made a surprise album every two or three years—seven total. Most recently Folklife, which treats old field recordings as seeds planted in modern soil.

“The Yo-Yo Ma of the banjo.”
