Events Description

The second edition of our 2021 Watch it Burn! Composite Arts Series at the Art Gallery of Hamilton’s Irving Zucker Sculpture Garden.

Celebrated documentary filmmaker RON MANN (Grass, Altman, Comic Book Confidential) will be in attendance to present a screening of his 1981 debut IMAGINE THE SOUND, the Holy Grail of improvised music / free jazz on film, co-produced with saxophonist, writer, photographer, CODA editor BILL SMITH, who masterfully interviews the esteemed subjects, including creative music titans Bill Dixon, Paul Bley, Cecil Taylor and Archie Shepp!

Hamilton double bassist DAVID LEE was part of the Bill Smith Ensemble (with David Prentice), an integral, seminal part of Canada’s & Toronto’s creative music scene in the ‘70s & ‘80s. Along for the ride with Lee, guitarist CHRIS PALMER & saxophonist CONNOR BENNETT, the trio known as LEE / PALMER / BENNETT, will revisit Bill Smith Ensemble pieces, bringing it all home, or full-circle, as it were.
