Schneider Haus is reopening on weekends in the fall, with pre-purchased timed entry starting on Saturday, September 26.

Nestled in the heart of downtown, Schneider Haus is the oldest surviving dwelling in Kitchener. Experience connections between today’s world, the Haus and the families who lived there. Old Haus – New stories.

Schneider Haus National Historic Site will reopen on Saturday, September 26, 2020 with reduced operational hours and limited site access to enable physical distancing and increased cleaning due to COVID 19. Hours of operation will be Saturday and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. The last available admission begins at 2:30 p.m.

Schneider Haus will reopen with two exhibits, Painting with Thread: Reimagining Hand Embroidery and For the Birds: Upcycled Bird Palaces, both on exhibit until December 20, 2020. Tickets are available for 90-minute bookings and capacity is limited to enable safety protocols that include physical distancing and increased cleaning.

Please note that currently our Gift Shop will not be open.

Each weekend we will be offering different socially distanced activities/crafts for you to enjoy during your visit and to take home:

October 3 & 4: Art making in autumn! Celebrate the changing season outdoors, painting collages with nature, and creating fall colours with natural (and some unusual) plant-based dyes. Artist Candice Leyland will be onsite October 4th for some watercolour painting en plein air.

October 10, 11 & 12: Visit on Thanksgiving weekend and enjoy “pumpkin” bowling and other outdoor physically distanced games, mini- scarecrows and crafts to take home. Scavenger hunts and fun activities for the whole family!

October 17 & 18: Schneider Haus Day of Mystery! Enjoy a mystery themed tour and learn how to create invisible message for your friends and family.

October 24, 25 & 31: Join us for some Spooktacular outdoor craft and games for Halloween! Wear your best costume – spooky or not and get a special treat!

Note Regional Council has passed a Face Covering Bylaw that makes it mandatory for residents to wear face coverings in enclosed public places that include museums. Please plan to wear a mask when visiting the Schneider Haus National Historic Site. The by-law exempts children under the age of five and those who are unable to wear a face covering (due to a medical condition, disability, etc.).

COVID-19 Precautions in Place for Your Visit:

Reduced visitor capacity

One-way direction flow through exhibits and the Haus

Physical distancing maintained for all visitors and staff

Increased cleaning of common area surfaces

Availability of alcohol-based hand sanitizer throughout the haus

We ask all visitors to wear a face mask to protect our staff and other visitors. Face masks, combined with hand washing and physical distancing can reduce the spread of COVID-19.

Information for Region of Waterloo Museums Members:

Anyone with a Region of Waterloo Museums membership that was current as of March 2020 has had their membership extended by 6 months.

Book your visit in advance to reserve your place. Walk-in visits may be unavailable due to reduced visitor capacity.

Choose the date and time for your visit, then enter your 8-digit membership number (on the back of your membership card, underneath the barcode) as the Promo Code to access free membership tickets.

As per the Province of Ontario’s document “A Framework for Reopening our Province: Stage 2” it is recommend that heritage institutions like the Region of Waterloo Museums collect contact information for the purposes of contact tracing. This information would only be shared with the Ministry of Health and Long Term Care in the event that an individual who attended the museum tests positive for Covid-19, on our about the time you attended.
