About Ukrainian Cultural heritage Village, Lamont County, Alberta

History is brought to life at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, an open-air museum where costumed role-players recreate the life of early Ukrainian pioneers that settled in east central Alberta from 1892-1930.

Step back in time to hear real stories of hardships and triumphs in Canada’s oldest and one-time largest bloc settlement of Ukrainian pioneers.

The village was established in 1974.

Attractions & Things to do

Explore more than 30 relocated and restored structures including a burdei (sod house), a one-room school, grain elevator, blacksmith shop and three churches of Eastern Byzantine Rite.

Learn about Galician and Bukovynian immigration to Canada, how the rural community functioned and flourished during early 1900s through the costumed role-players who truly takes you back to early settlers’ life in east central Alberta by remaining in character at all times.

Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village hosts a variety of special events, exhibits and feature days to share the story of east central Alberta’s Ukrainian pioneers. Special events take visitors of all ages back to east central Alberta’s cultural and agricultural roots. If you have never been to the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village, special events are a perfect way to learn about Ukrainian culture and history in Alberta.

Make your experience complete with authentic Ukrainian food.

The village is also available for private functions.

Open from 10 a.m. 5 p.m., May long weekend to Labour Day.

May 21, 2022 to September 5, 2022 | Wednesday to Sunday, 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. (closed Mondays and Tuesdays, except holiday Mondays)

The site is closed to the general public from the day after Labour Day to the May long weekend. However, we are open for pre-booked tours, school groups, private functions and to the general public for special events from Monday to Friday, 8:15 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Two hours or more depending on interest.

How to get to Ukrainian Cultural heritage Village?

Located in Lamont county, Ukrainian Cultural heritage Village is 25min east of Edmonton on HWY 16 (40 minutes from downtown Edmonton), right next to Elk Island National Park.

Directions:

Go east on Yellowhead Hwy (HWY 16) and turn south on Range Rd 195A to reach the village.

Free parking available on site.

No public transit available.

What about Amenities & Accessibility at Ukrainian Cultural heritage Village?

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is an outdoor living history museum. It is located in a rural setting, and weather conditions may differ greatly from conditions in the city of Edmonton.

Appropriate clothing is essential for a safe and enjoyable visit:

Good walking shoes are recommended. Sunscreen and sun hats during bright, hot summer days.

No food or drink is allowed in historic buildings; however, water bottles are permitted.

Pets are not allowed unless the owner requires their assistance. Smoking is not permitted in the historic village.

No alcohol is permitted at any time.

The following visitor amenities are available at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village:

Food services – open during summer season only.

Gift shop – open during summer season only.

Large picnic area with fire pits (no wood supplied).

The Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village is a Visitor Information Centre for the surrounding area. Plan your tour of Lamont County and Kalyna Country Ecomuseum when you visit our Visitor Reception Centre. Please note that there are no accommodations or camping available at the Ukrainian Cultural Heritage Village.
