We are thrilled to return to Vancouver’s historic Orpheum for a sparkling performance of Bach and Handel’s early choral works. In 1707, Georg Friedrich Händel (later to be known as George Frideric Handel) and Johann Sebastian Bach were precocious 22-year-olds. For Bach, it was a good year: he applied and was hired as the organist of the Blasius Church in Mühlhausen and was able to marry his second cousin Maria Barbara. Part of the application was the performance of one of his most ‘choral’ cantatas, Christ lag in Todesbanden. After briefly trying his hand at university studies, Handel moved from an organist position in Halle to employment as a violinist and harpsichordist in Hamburg. In 1706, Handel traveled to Italy at the invitation of Ferdinando de’ Medici. Whilst in Rome, Handel wrote some of the most exuberant and energetic music he was ever to write, primarily the sparkling Dixit Dominus, written in Rome in 1707.
