Events Description

The Saskatoon Community Bands presents their annual concert at Saskatoon’s Broadway Theatre. The show includes performances by the Wind Ensemble under the direction of Peter England along with the Jazz Band under the direction of Doug Gilmour. Both groups will perform repertoire from a variety of genres. The Wind Ensemble will feature works from today’s contemporary composers such as Clifton Taylor with a dip into the past with Mozart’s Sinfonia Concertante performed with guest ensemble, the Prairie Winds Woodwind Quintet, accompanied by the band. Featured soloist will be Stewart Parkinson, a member of the band’s saxophone section, performing Alfred Reed’s Ballade for Alto Saxophone with band accompaniment. And as always they will conclude their portion of the program with a rousing foot-stomping march.

The Jazz Ensemble is reported to be one of the largest “Big Band” groups in the country with over 40 members who will swing you through a variety of swing, Latin and ballad tunes from all the great jazz composers including Thelonius Monk. Individual band members will be featured soloists throughout the performance.
