Faust: by Mahogany Frog (19+)

Horror
NEVER before has the screen revealed a spectacle of such size and impressiveness as in the epic production. The world-famous story of fate and temptation, renowned as an opera, has now been dramatically immortalized in a picture which can be truly called great. Murnau’s FAUST will be brought to life with a brand new original LIVE music score, written and performed by Winnipeg’s Mahogany Frog — an instrumental electronic rock band from Winnipeg. Using an arsenal of keyboards, cacophonous, feedback-ridden guitars, fuzz-bass and walls of electronics, the group creates dynamic, multi-layered songs which explore tone, mood and composition.

Director: F.W. Murnau

Dr. Jekyll & Mr. Hyde: by New Jacobin Club (19+)

Horror
Based on the Robert Louis Stevenson story: Doctor Henry Jekyll’s enthusiasm for science and his selfless acts of service have made him a much-admired man. But as he visits Sir George Carew one evening, his host criticizes him for his reluctance to experience the more sensual side of life. Sir George goads Jekyll into visiting a music hall, where he watches the alluring dancer Gina. Jekyll becomes fascinated with the two contrasting sides of human nature, and he becomes obsessed with the idea of separating them. After extensive work in his laboratory, he devises a formula that does indeed allow him to alternate between two completely different personalities, his own and that of a brutish, lascivious person whom he names Hyde. It is not long before the personality of Hyde begins to dominate Jekyll’s affairs. Outcasts among wise men and fools alike, the New Jacobin Club is a fiendish group of musicians, poets, painters and performance artists who have been entertaining and provoking since the mid 1990’s. Combining elements of seedy bohemian stage theatrics with bombastic and darkly psychedelic anthems has given the long lived ensemble a shocking and original edge that has attracted as much heated controversy as it has fiercely loyal fans. The core of the group is led by founding father and roaring frontman Xerxes Praetorius Horde (“The Horde” to his allies) and accompanied by Poison Candi (theremin, percussion, vocals), The Luminous (electric cello), The Ruin (bass) and The Rat King (drums) and Mistress Nagini (synth & backing vocals).

Director: John S. Robertson

Haxan: by The Garrys (19+)

Horror
Decades before The Blair Witch Project brought popularity to the documentary-style horror genre, Danish director Benjamin Christensen unleashed his 1922 silent film Häxan -or- Witchcraft Through The Ages. See the film on the big screen, with a new original score by The Garrys (recorded live in 2019 at the fourth installment in the Halloween-season Riversdale Silent Classics Series. Häxan (Danish: Heksen; English title: The Witches or Witchcraft Through the Ages) was completed in 1920, and released in 1922. The film is a Swedish-Danish documentary-style silent horror film written and directed by Benjamin Christensen. Based partly on Christensen’s study of the Malleus Maleficarum, a 15th-century German guide for inquisitors, Häxan is a study of how superstition and the misunderstanding of diseases and mental illness could lead to the hysteria of the witch-hunts. The film was made as a documentary but contains dramatised sequences that are comparable to horror films.

Director: Benjamin Christensen

Nosferatu: by Shooting Guns (19+)

Horror
The earliest surviving screen adaptation of Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel has had a long and dangerous life of its own. Almost destroyed by Stoker’s widow because of copyright infringement, this film has outlasted many others of the silent era. Hailing from Saskatoon, SK, in the heart of the Canadian prairies, JUNO and Polaris Prize award nominees Shooting Guns are hard at work fortifying the heavy end of the psychedelic spectrum, haunting the foggy moor between Sabbath-styled doom riffery and heavy pulse-riding kraut-rock.

Director: F.W. Murnau
