Events Description

Enjoy a menu inspired by foods portrayed in iconic Italian films, while those film clips are shown and fun expert commentary is provided.

Dinner and a movie has always been one of the most popular ways to spend Valentine’s Day. Although the traditional way may not be an option this year, our virtual version, by Zoom, is even better. The movie will be the dinner, and the dinner will be the movie!

You will enjoy a memorable evening immersing you and your Valentine in two of the most significant pillars of Italian culture: food and film. While Italian cuisine is often recognized as one of the best in the world, it is less widely known that Italian cinema has produced some of the best films of all time. Of course, true to Italians’ ever-present preoccupation with food, some of the most iconic scenes from these films involve classic Italian dishes.

With this in mind, we have designed a menu curated to match foods portrayed in Italian films. Prior to each course, we will show a scene, from an iconic Italian film, which features a classic Italian dish. Before and after each clip, enlightening and fun commentary will be provided by Professor Teresa Lobalsamo, PHD, Italian Studies Undergraduate Coordinator from the University of Toronto Mississauga, and Mauro Ritacca, Owner of Cucina Mauro Catering . There will then be an intermission to allow you to enjoy our interpretation of the dish shown in the clip; and then we will do it all over again for the next course!

About Teresa Lobalsamo

Dr. Lobalsamo is Associate Professor and Italian Studies Undergraduate Coordinator with the University of Toronto Mississauga. Her areas of academic interest and expertise include Italian cinema and Italian gastronomy, teaching and publishing on both topics.

About the Chef

Your meal will be prepared by Cucina Mauro Head Chef Andrea Bolis. Andrea is from Milan, Italy, where he received his formal culinary training before working in restaurants, and as a private chef, all over the world.
