Events Description
Free with admission, the AGO’s installation of Kusama’s Narcissus Garden features over 1,300 stainless-steel mirror balls spread throughout the Signy-Eaton Gallery from Feb. 24, 2018 to April 29, 2018.
Kusama’s Narcissus Garden opens before Yayoi Kusama: Infinity Mirrors, the first survey exhibition to explore the evolution of the celebrated Japanese artist’s immersive infinity rooms.
ABOUT THE EXHIBITION
Narcissus Garden is named after the youth in Greek mythology who fell in love with his own reflection in the water. Kusama presented the first version of the piece back in 1966 at the Venice Biennale, where she installed over a thousand mirror-surfaced balls in the Giardini outside exhibition space. Dressed in a golden kimono, Kusama sold the spheres for passers-by at two dollars apiece. Her slogan was: “Your narcissism for sale”. Kusama had not actually been invited to participate in the biennale, and the organisers put a stop to the sale of the spheres. The installation nevertheless remained on display.
Narcissus Garden has subsequently been presented in different version all over the world.
