Events Description

Garson Kanin’s classic of 1950s Broadway is both a comic masterpiece and a startlingly prescient glimpse of the corruption that can spread in a democracy once moneyed interests begin to take root.

Harry Brock, merchant of junk, prides himself on being a self-made man. Now the uncouth Harry wants to re-brand himself as a tycoon, and has come to Washington D.C. to wield his influence, rub elbows with government big-wigs, and get some shady legislation passed.

Travelling with him, however, is his girlfriend, ex-chorus girl Billie Dawn, whose lack of social graces or even a rudimentary understanding of politics Harry worries will reflect badly on him, so he hires newspaperman Paul Verrall to launch Billie on a path to self-educating.

Yet as Billie becomes increasingly interested and engaged in the world around her, Harry begins to worry that his hold over her is slipping.

By turns uproarious and sobering, and packed with a cast of vibrant characters throughout, Kanin’s play reminds us that a healthy democracy depends on its inhabitants to stay healthy, and that abuse of power cannot be stemmed without an informed and engaged citizenry.
