Events Description

Participating in drama helps children in both life and learning. It increases their understanding of the world they live in, while it works to develop personal skills that will help them achieve success throughout their lives. At Carousel Theatre for Young People, our drama school is a core part of our mission as we seek to provide experiences that inspire, educate and empower young people.

Our drama school began in 1981; we are proud to have played a role in providing young people with a place to play, create and learn for so many years and look forward to many, many more!

Stage Kids | Ages 3-4 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
This is where it all begins! In this playful and welcoming class, our youngest students are introduced to theatre through creative expression and respectful interaction with new friends. Through the use of guided storytelling, song, and games, students will use movement, voice and imagination to put themselves in the story. Learning to use their bodies in a safe and controlled way and to communicate with clarity, pre-schoolers will develop foundational tools for the stage and the classroom, all while having fun and staying silly!

Please note: children must be fully potty-trained.

Imagination Station | Ages 5-6 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
In this fun and energetic class, students will be encouraged to make bold choices and express their individuality while also respecting their peers and working with a group. Through games and exercises students will become the storytellers, creating characters using physical and vocal expression and acting out stories from beginning to end! The use of memorized dialogue lays the groundwork for reading and script work, and the incorporation of stories from around the world builds cultural awareness.

Theatre Journeys | Ages 7-8 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
Ready to start the next “stage” of acting? In Theatre Journeys, students will translate their creative play into fully developed stories through interactive theatre games and beginning improv exercises. The basics of staging, working with a script, and how to take direction are introduced, while a greater understanding of plot, theme, and story structure are gained. Students will develop performance skills while gaining confidence and independence.

Acting Adventures | Ages 9-10 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
In this adventurous class, students are encouraged to share big ideas and bold choices while developing their skill set through more complex drama exercises, improv games and script work. Young actors are individually empowered while incorporating their ideas and suggestions into group developed creations. This class will help to build acting skills and increase confidence as they learn to make strong, specific acting choices.

Drama Explorations | Ages 11-12 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
This spirited and exploratory class explores more focused theatre training for growing pre-teen actors. Building on physical work, vocal exercises and a variety of acting techniques, students are introduced to more complex character development and script analysis. A deeper understanding of the rehearsal process and ensemble work is employed as the class works collectively on sourced and original text. Techniques start to become more sophisticated and precise while continuing to build confidence and communication skills. No previous experience required.

Teen Company Players | Ages 13-17 years – in person at Carousel Theatre for Young People on Granville Island
This exciting and challenging class features skill-building that will move maturing teen actors towards the refinement of a personal artistic process. No previous experience is required, and students are challenged and guided at their own individual levels. Students are encouraged to explore what most interests them, and therefore a variety of acting skills may be incorporated to best fit the needs of the group. Techniques may include but are not limited to text analysis, scene study, monologues, ensemble performance, original creation, playwriting, physical theatre, improv and clowning and mask work. This class is a great foundational experience for students looking to actively pursue more intensive opportunities in theatre and acting.
