The Vancouver Aquarium, Stanley Park, 845 Avison Way, Vancouver

Events Description

Join Ocean Wise for a talk by celebrated author and ocean champion, Ian Urbina. Ian will discuss his ‘Outlaw Ocean’ reporting which was originally published in The New York Times. Several of his stories have been adapted into major feature films, including The Outlaw Ocean, which was purchased by Netflix and Leonardo DiCaprio.
The Outlaw Ocean reporting took Ian across 5 seas and 14 countries, during which time he experienced incredible and frightening situations. From meeting a Burmese migrant who was enslaved at sea for 3 years, to his encounter with a Tanzanian stowaway who was left to die, Ian’s stories will leave you wanting to learn more about the lawless frontier that is our vast oceans.
A powerful speaker, Ian’s talk to an intimate Ocean Wise audience will cover some of the ocean’s most unknown threats including slavery, overfishing and human trafficking.
