Boca del Lupo Presents Red Phone And Offers Plays2Perform@Home
Two Innovative Theatre Projects that Blur the Line between Audience and Actor. Part theatre and part social intervention, Red Phone is an audience-to-audience performance that utilizes the intimacy of a phone call and the technology of a teleprompter. And Plays2Perform@Home is an artfully designed script Box Set of plays commissioned when social isolation started that can be performed with your bubble around the dinner table, picnic blanket, or around a campfire.
Plays2Perform@Home can be ordered online and delivered to your home (mail order theatre) or picked up from The Fishbowl on Granville Island where we will also be running the Red Phones.
Red Phone takes place between two hand-crafted, fully enclosed phone booths outfitted with a vintage red phone and an integrated teleprompter. Two at a time, audience members engage each other in a five-minute conversation written by a Canadian writer. The act of having the conversation with an unseen partner provides an anonymity that adds to the intimacy of the performance, encouraging participants to be the actor in their own theatrical experience. Red Phone is a one-of-a-kind performance that has been described as the theatrical equivalent to singing in the shower. Free of charge and open three days a week, anyone can walk up and into the booths with a friend or family member and spend 5 minutes engaging in some of the most urgent, touching, thought provoking conversations written by some of Canada’s most exciting writers.
In Plays2Perform@Home, to date Boca del Lupo has commissioned four Canadian playwrights to pen scripts to be performed around the dinner table, picnic blanket or campfire this summer. Working with Valerie Thai, the award winning head designer and art director of Adbusters for five years running, each writer will create 10 to 20 minute plays with 3 to 8 characters which will be packaged up in a boutique box set and delivered to your home. P2P@Home asks the audience to take a leading role in creating a piece of theatre with the close friends and family they have chosen to be a part of their “bubble”. The first four playwrights contributing scripts are: Governor General Award winner and well known character actor Hiro Kanagawa, Jessie Award Winning playwright, director and actor Jovanni Sy, Dora Award winning director, writer, and collaborator Karen Hines, and Dora Award winning playwright Tara Beagan. Each script will be a different genre ranging from “Kitchen Sink Drama” to “Satirical Farce”.
