Ghosts
by Henrik Ibsen

Directed by: Jeff Madden

Featuring: Monica Reis, Sam Hagenlocher, Bernard Boland, Vic Unruh and Kathleen Watts

What happens when the greatest Norwegian historical playwright dishes out religion, venereal disease, incest and euthanasia to a 19th century audience? You got it. It’s violently condemned and thrown onto the trash heap of literary history. Henrick Ibsen made no apologies. He knew this play had to be written. Ghosts bounces back from the grave time and time again to deliver thought-provoking drama that questions the institutions which we are all subjected to and surrounded by – inherited opinions and traditions from parents and controversial doctrines like patriotism, belief in God, respect for authority – ideas that are undefined in most of us but are pervasive just the same.

From the playwright who created modern theatre, Ghosts is the Pandora’s Box of middle-class society, revealing all that was considered indecent, disgusting, sick, and poisonous. The characters are deeply troubled people laid bare to us, their deeply troubled audience. Ibsen is the playwright who makes us understand that we were led down every drain in the world, and still are, by the institutionalism of the middle class – its politics, religion, morality, family life and economics.

Come join us as we spiral down this moral rabbit-hole and encounter things about ourselves and our society that many of us don’t even want to understand.
