FortWhyte Eco Tours are designed to help you slow down and learn about how nature is connected. Discover how bison shaped our prairie landscape, search for wildlife hotspots, or get a deeper understanding of how FortWhyte became the nature oasis it is today.

FortWhyte Story

From concrete jungle to nature oasis.

Would you believe that FortWhyte Alive was once an industrial landscape used for mining clay? From ancient bedrock to modern technology, the landscape is constantly evolving. In less than 50 years it has transformed into a haven for plants, animals and people. Join an interpreter to learn more about the past, present and future of this urban nature oasis.

Date: Tuesdays in July | 1 pm-2 pm

Baby Bison Walk

See the 9th largest land animal at its smallest and cutest.

The Plains Bison is a magnificent mammal and fitting symbol for the province of Manitoba. See the herd in action, hear how this icon of the prairie almost disappeared, and feel a connection to the herd as you see the miracle of baby bison.

Dates: Sundays | 11 am-noon, Fridays 1 pm-2 pm

Wild Edibles Walk

This beginner foraging workshop will teach you some useful tips and tricks for identifying, harvesting, and preparing wild foods.

Join experienced FortWhyte Alive nature educators on a guided walk through beautiful FortWhyte Alive and discover the possibilities wild plant foods can add to your outdoor (and meal-time) adventures.

Habitat Secrets

See Southern Manitoba’s natural beauty with a new view.

FortWhyte is a wonderful mix of grassland, forests, and wetlands — truly a naturalist’s paradise! Our naturalist team will share some of their favourite places to see birds and mammals, what key plants define the different habitat areas, and help you see FortWhyte Alive and all of Southern Manitoba’s natural beauty with a new view!
