Events Description

A Magical Journey of Morrocan Ancestry
In HALKA, the performers of the Acrobatic Troupe of Tangiers (Groupe Acrobatique de Tanger) invoke through their movement the memories of the art form that has shaped their relationship with the world. Their feats of acrobatic prowess, unusual and powerful, draw their contemporary creative vocabulary from age-old inherited traditions. They dialogue with their music, which is composed of recited poetry, shouts, chants and percussion. They play with seemingly insignificant objects to share their personal stories. One of these is the Facha, a sash wrapped around the waist of the apprentice acrobat to help lift them into the air. Another is the Djefna, a metal laundry basin that is also a festive instrument used at weddings. The acrobats explore the contradictions of their world, a world torn between the sacred and the profane, a taste for the spectacular and the presence of the invisible, between authenticity and borrowing. They also express with boundless humour the freedom of having used this art form to break through barrriers of geography, culture, gender and social class. We are invited to abandon our usual frames of reference and let ourselves be carried away by the energy of their bodies; multiple, acrobatic and musical.
