All Hallows’ Eve: a fitting night for Saint-Saëns’ famed skeleton dance, and from Gluck’s opera, Orfeo ed Euridice, his powerful Dance of the Furies. Not to be outdone, Weber is also included with his vivid depiction of demonic powers in the overture to his wildly popular opera Der Freischütz. Since Halloween really is for kids (and the young at heart), one of the most successful alumni of the WNMF Composer Institute, Chinese-Canadian composer Roydon Tse’s youthful work is a perfect pairing.
WSO principal trombonist Steven Dyer performs a work by a composer known more for his film scores including The Godfather than his orchestral works. We’ll also hear Nino Rota’s Trombone Concerto and a symphony by French composer Bizet written when he was just 17.
