Events Description

The Ice Chute is a toboggan slide located at the south end of The Forks. The Ice Chute opens on February 5th as part of the celebration of Manitoba’s 150th anniversary and will be part of the fun offered on the Manitoba 150 Trails. Although not officially a part of the Manitoba 150 trails, this is a fun way to experience Manitoba’s winter and remember the province’s rich past.

The Ice Chute is conceived, designed, and created by the Manitoba firm Sputnik Architecture, whose architects took their inspiration from the 1922 Winnipeg Winter Carnival.

The ice for the project was harvested from Fort Whyte Alive and The Forks including 72 blocks of 11-cm thick ice for the base of The Ice Chute, 72 blocks of 15-cm thick ice for the walls, and 11 semi truckloads full of snow to create the ramp. In whole, 45 tons of ice was used to make the Chute and the ice was shaped using chainsaws and a variety of other manual tools.
