Events Description

he First Annual Winnipeg Crankie Festival will bring together the finest in Winnipeg’s Musical, Spoken Word and Visual Arts communities. It will also bring together people from all walks of life to participate on and off stage in what will truly be an interactive and a collaborative festival experience by introducing the community to “Crankies,” a storytelling art form popular in the 19th Century and a forerunner of modern day film.

will add a new dimension (from the past) to the live performances. Crankies, or “moving panoramas” as they were known in the 1800s, were immensely popular with audiences throughout the world, bringing hand cranked, moving pictures to performance and story-telling.

Crankies will be a reoccurring aspect of the performances, and will feature unique cross media collaborations with different artists around the city. The weekend long workshop program will include crankie making, various acoustic instruments and vocal styles as well as jams hosted by local music organizations.
