Expect Traffic Disruption in Edmonton Area due to Historic Super Load Transportation

An 820-tonne piece of heavy equipment, called a splitter, left Edmonton on Jan. 6 for its destination in the Industrial Heartland, where it is scheduled to arrive on Jan. 9.

Govt. of Alberta is advising travellers to keep an eye out for the heaviest load ever to travel on Alberta’s highway network.

From January 6 to 9, 2019, a splitter — 820-tonne, 96-metre-long piece of petrochemical development equipment, will be transported from Dacro Industries, Edmonton to Heartland Petrochemical Complex over four days.

This splitter is heavier than Caterpillar’s largest mining truck which is used in the oilsands and six times as large. At its largest configuration, including all vehicles, the load is 179 metres long, 9.5 metres wide and 13 metres high (587 feet long x 31 feet wide x 42 feet high).

The load will use the entire width of a two-lane highway, including the shoulder.

Road users are reminded that drivers travelling behind the load will face delays as the load will be moving below the posted speed limit and may pull over periodically.

At select areas along the route, the load will be travelling against the flow of traffic, escorted by guide vehicles for safety. Lanes will be blocked off accordingly.

The load will Dacro Industries on Jan 6, 9 p.m. and is scheduled to reach Hwys 14 & 21 at 5 a.m, Jan 7. It will leave at 8:30 a.m on Jan 8 and will reach Lamont at 4 p.m.  The final leg of the transportation will start on Jan 9, 8:30 a.m. and will conclude  by noon of the same day.

Drivers are reminded to watch for accompanying guide vehicles and flag people, which will control traffic and enhance safety.

Scheduled for completion by the end of 2021, the Heartland Petrochemical Complex will convert locally sourced, low-cost propane into 525,000 tonnes per year of polypropylene, a high value, easy to transport plastic used in the manufacturing of a wide range of finished products. The facility will consist of a propane dehydrogenation (PDH) and a polypropylene (PP) facility.
