Minimum Wage in Canada – 2024

The minimum wage is the least hourly wage employees must be paid, and it varies from province to province.

The minimum wage will be increasing in some of the provinces and territories this year. Here is the list of upcoming changes and the minimum wage in Canada for 2024:

2024 Minimum Wage Across Provinces and Territories

  1. Alberta: $15 per hour (effective June 26, 2019). The minimum wage for students under 18 is $13/hour.
  2. British Columbia: $16.75 per hour (effective June 1, 2023).
  3. Manitoba: $15.30 per hour   (effective October 1, 2023).
      • Minimum wage is $15.80 per hour, effective October 1, 2024.
  4. New Brunswick: $14.75 per hour (effective April 1, 2023).   The minimum overtime wage is s $22.13 per hour.
      • From April 1, 2024 – $15.30 per hour. The rate will be adjusted in accordance with the Consumer Price Index of New Brunswick every April.
  5. Newfoundland and Labrador: $15 per hour (effective October 1, 2023).
      • From April 1, 2024 –  $15.60 per hour. The minimum overtime wage rate will increase to $23.40.
  6. Nova Scotia: $15 per hour (effective October 1, 2023).
      • From April 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase to $15.20 per hour.  (The wage is adjusted according to the national CPI percentage  for 2023 + 1 percent.)
  7. Ontario: $16.55 per hour (effective October 1, 2023) until September 30, 2024.
  8. Prince Edward Island:  $15 per hour (effective October 1, 2023).
      • On April 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase to $15.40 per hour.
      • On October 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase to $16.00 per hour.
  9. Quebec:   $15.25 per hour  (effective May 1, 2023).
      • On May 1, 2024, the minimum wage will increase to $15.75 per hour.
  10. Saskatchewan:  $14 per hour (effective October 1, 2023).
      • The minimum wage will increase to $15 per hour on October 1, 2024.
  11. Yukon: $16.77 per hour (effective April 1, 2023).
      • From April 1, 2024,  the minimum wage will increase to $17.59 per hour. The minimum wage increases annually on April 1  based on Consumer Price Index (CPI).
  12. Northwest Territories: $16.05 per hour (effective September 1, 2023).
      • The minimum wage will be adjusted annually using a formula based on the percentage change in the Consumer Price Index (CPI) for Yellowknife and the percentage change in the average hourly wage (AHW) in the NWT for the preceding calendar year, every September 1.
  13. Nunavut:  $19 per hour (effective January 1, 2024)

The federal minimum wage is $16.65 per hour Effective April 1, 2024, the minimum wage will be $17.30 per hour.

Federally regulated employers must pay an employee the higher minimum wage if the minimum wage in that province is higher than the federal minimum wage.
