Quebec Winter Tire Requirements for 2026–27: Key Dates, Exemptions and Penalties

Quebec drivers have until December 1 to ensure their vehicles are equipped with winter tires, and the provincial government is encouraging motorists to make arrangements before the first major snowfall.

The provincial government urges drivers not to wait until the last minute to prepare their vehicles for winter.

When Are Winter Tires Mandatory in Quebec?

Winter tires are mandatory from December 1 to March 15 for most motor vehicles registered in Quebec, including rental vehicles.

Drivers who fail to comply with the regulation face fines ranging from $200 to $300.

The requirement does not apply to vehicles registered outside Quebec, including vehicles visiting from other provinces. Other exemptions apply to certain vehicle categories.

How Do You Know if Your Winter Tires Meet the Requirements?

To comply with Quebec’s regulations, winter tires must display the official mountain and snowflake pictogram or be equipped with permitted studs.

Tire condition matters, too. The legal minimum tread depth is 1.6 millimetres, although Quebec recommends at least 4.8 millimetres for winter driving.

Winter tires in good condition can reduce braking distances by 25 per cent and retain their elasticity at temperatures as low as -40°C.

Who Is Exempt From the Winter Tire Requirement?

Several exemptions exist, including for trailers, heavy vehicles, agricultural machinery, motorhomes and vehicles registered outside Quebec.

Temporary exemptions are also available in specific circumstances, including certain newly purchased vehicles.

Drivers should check the provincial government’s exemption rules before assuming their vehicle is excluded.

Why Install Winter Tires Before December 1?

Although December 1 is the legal deadline, winter conditions can arrive earlier.

Quebec encourages drivers to arrange tire installation in advance rather than waiting for snow or icy roads.

Even with winter tires installed, motorists should adjust their speed and leave more distance between vehicles when road conditions deteriorate.
