Things to Do Outdoors During Winter in Annapolis Valley

The Annapolis Valley is one of the warmest places in Nova Scotia during the winter months, but it doesn’t stop the snowy fun. The valley becomes a winter wonderland with lots to do. From huge sledding hills to beautiful trails to explore, the Valley has it all.

1. Watch Eagles at Sheffield Mills

Bald Eagles are beautiful creatures that can be spotted all over the Valley, but did you know that you can watch them being fed? Volunteers feed the eagles at the corner of Middle Dyke Road and Bains Road daily from January to March.

2. Go Outdoor Skating

Behind Coldbrook Lions Club

Once the weather is chilly enough, this popular man-made ice rink is open. The rink is open 24 hours a day, as long as the weather is clear. There is a shelter where people can put on skates. There are times posted for when no hockey sticks or pucks are allowed on the ice.

Next to the Credit Union Centre Arena in Kingston

During the winter, the tennis courts next to the Credit Union Centre Arena are turned into an outdoor skating rink. There are shovels available for light maintenance and cleaning off any snow.

Port Williams Pond

Once the temperatures are well below freezing, the Port Williams Pond becomes an outdoor skating rink. There are lights for night skating. You will need to bring a shovel to clear the ice.

 Pond at Stronach Park

The lovely duck pond at Stronach Park freezes over in the winter. There is a flag system in place to indicate ice conditions. A green flag is when you can skate at your own risk. Do not skate if there is a red flag.

3. Ski Martock

This is the ‘must visit’ place for winter fun in the Annapolis Valley. This iconic downhill skiing and snowboarding resort is visited by people from across the Maritimes. They do offer rentals, day passes, and lessons are also available. They also have beautifully groomed cross-country skiing and snowshoeing trails.

4. Winter Fun at Paragon Golf & Country Club

The Valley’s newest set of groomed trails takes you around the beautiful Paragon Golf & Country Club. The 5km of double track trails are designed for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing.

5. Enjoy Snowshoeing at Eagle Crest Golf Course

When the snow starts falling, the greens at Eagle Crest Golf Course turn into a gorgeous winter wonderland. The course becomes a wonderful place to cross-country ski and snowshoe all winter long.

6. Check Out Miners Marsh

Miners Marsh is a popular winter walking trail in Kentville. The 1.7km trail is groomed all winter long. Once the marsh has frozen over, you can spot locals skating on the ice. While walking along the trail, you may spot bald eagles.

7. Hike Apple Capital Heritage Trail

Apple Capital Heritage Trail is a part of the Annapolis Valley Trails System. The 2.2km long part of the trail is a shared-use trail. During the winter, the trail is used for winter walking, snowshoeing, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling.

8. Explore Castle Frederick Farms

There are around 10km of privately owned trails at Castle Frederick Farms. The trails are open to the public for winter walking, snowshoeing, and cross-country skiing. The trails will take you through a collection of forestry roads.

9. Walk Black Rock Trails

Starting behind Black Rock Culture & Recreation Center, the Black Rock Trails are about 30km long. Hike your way through a snown laden forests and past scenic shorelines.

10. Go Snowmobiling

Zip around the Valley on over 600km of trails that are maintained by the Valley Ridge Runners. The twisty North Mountain trails offer breathtaking views of the Bay of Fundy. The Annapolis Valley floor trails will take you across farmland, and you can spot Bald Eagles along the way. South Mountain has sweeping trails that follow lakes and streams.

11. Zip down Burgher Hill

Burgher Hill is a must sled hill in Kentville. This huge hill is a very popular spot on a snowy winter day. There is parking on the road leading to the top of the hill. It is a steep climb back to the top, so many kids will start lower on the hill.

12. Go Sledding at King’s Edgehill School

Grab your sled and head to King’s Edgehill School. There are two hills near the school to pick from. The longer hill is a slower option, and the shorter hill is much steeper and faster ride.
