2023: Best Elementary Schools in Alberta According to Fraser Institute

The Fraser Institute, a renowned Canadian public policy research and educational organization, has unveiled its annual rankings of Alberta elementary schools, evaluating 848 entities across public, Catholic, independent, and charter sectors based on academic indicators from 2021-22’s provincewide test results.

Per the rating website, the report assesses schools on eight academic parameters, derived mainly from grade 6 test scores in critical areas like language arts, math, science, and social studies.

Fraser Institute says not all schools qualify for inclusion in the list—criteria dictate a minimum of 10 students in both grades 3 and 6, alongside requisite test result submissions for the latter in all assessed subjects.

Schools featuring only up to grade 5 and those with low enrollments that do not meet the minimum test result requirements are omitted from the ranking.

Fraser Institute says although these rankings present a unique tool for parents, enabling them to contrast the academic prowess of various schools and understand performance trends over time, the organisation advises against selecting a school based solely on this data.

Parents are encouraged to consider myriad facets of a school’s offerings by exploring their websites and engaging with principals, teachers, and fellow parents to ensure a holistic understanding of what the institution can provide to their children.
