Riverfest Elora, a long-running independent music festival in Ontario, will shut down after 15 years due to mounting financial pressures.

Organizers announced the closure on Tuesday with what they described as a difficult but necessary decision following consecutive years of significant losses.
The festival began in 2009 as a backyard fundraiser created by Marilyn Koop and expanded into a three-day event featuring multiple stages and more than 50 artists. It grew into a fixture of Elora’s cultural landscape, supported by a small staff and over 600 volunteers. Despite its popularity and recognition within the province’s festival scene, organizers said the event struggled financially for most of its history.
According to the statement, Riverfest Elora generated only modest profits a few times in 15 years and saw no profits in recent seasons. Since 2023, expenses have increased sharply while revenues failed to keep pace, resulting in more than $1.2 million in losses over three years. Organizers said production and infrastructure costs have continued to rise, while ticket sales and attendance revenue could not offset expenses. They also cited declining sponsorship support, once a key source of stability for independent festivals.
Organizers noted that even with one of its most operationally successful seasons in 2025, the financial gap had become “unbridgeably wide.” Continuing under the current model, they said, would deepen the financial strain.
Festival owners said they had devoted significant personal and financial efforts to sustaining the event through challenges such as unpredictable weather, industry shifts and changing economic conditions. They also expressed gratitude to staff, volunteers, artists, local businesses and patrons for their long-term support.
A transition period will follow, with staff staying on to manage the closure. Early Bird 2026 ticket holders will receive information on refunds. Organizers invited past attendees to share memories of the event using the hashtag #RiverfestElora.
