National Indigenous Peoples Day
Nestled in the Eastern region of Unama’ki (Cape Breton), Louisbourg sits on the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq. The Fortress of Louisbourg was one of many settler colonies in North America that was constructed on land that was never surrendered. It is important that we recognize the negative impacts that colonialism had, and continues to have, on Mi’kmaq and the world’s Indigenous peoples.
