Lang Pioneer Village Museum

Established in 1967, and operated by the County of Peterborough, Lang Pioneer Village Museum is a living history museum. The Museum features over 30 restored and recreated building, many of which were donated from the surrounding townships. The Village is complete with lanes and pathways, vegetable and herb gardens and other authentic details of a 19th-century hamlet. The Village houses a collection of over 26,000 artifacts.

Experience Peterborough County’s history come to life at Lang Pioneer Village Museum!

Costumed interpreters show the settler story of hardship and hope as they demonstrate the life and trades of a settler in the 1800s.

Learn about the history and culture of local First Nations at Aabnaabin Camp, a partnership with Curve Lake and Hiawatha First Nation.

Explore the original 1800’s buildings like David Fife’s 1820’s log cabin, fully operational Lang Grist Mill, and the S. W. Lowry Weaver Shop & Jacquard Loom Interpretive Centre which houses one of only a handful of authentic Jacquard looms on display in North America.

Time required to visit

Pre-Booked Guided Tours are 45 minutes. Guests are permitted an additional hour to explore the additional buildings, artifacts and exhibits in the historic Village.

Tour for up to four (4) people- $40

You may add up to 16 additional people to your tour group for a maximum of 20 people per group*. The following rates apply for each additional group member:

Adults – $10 per person
Seniors (60+) & Students – $8 per person
Youths 5-14 years of age – $5 per person
Children under 5 years of age – Free

* Please note: The maximum group limit will be in accordance with COVID-19 regulations as set by the Government of Ontario.

Lang Pioneer Village Museum is located just 10 minutes east of Peterborough on the shores of the Historic Indian River.

From Peterborough:

Lang Pioneer Village Museum

Travel 10 km east of Peterborough on Highway 7, then south on County Road 34 (Heritage Line) for 6 km. Watch for the signs.

From Port Hope:
Travel north on County Road 28 to Bailieboro. Turn right on County Road 2 and follow to Keene. At Keene, turn north on County Road 34 (Heritage Line) and follow for 4 km. Watch for the signs.

From Lindsay:
Travel east on Highway 7, then south on County Road 10 to Cavan. Head east on Highway 7A to the Highway 115 interchange. Follow Highway 115 north to north east of Peterborough. Proceed along Highway 7 east to County Road 34 (Heritage Line) and head south for 6 km. Watch for the signs.

 

From Cobourg & Belleville:
From Highway 401, travel north on Highway 45 to Hastings then west on County Road 2. At Keene, turn north on County Road 34 (Heritage Line) and follow for 4 km. Watch for the signs.

From Toronto:
Travel Highway 401 east to Highway 115/35 and follow north to Peterborough. Proceed along Highways 7 east to County Road 34 (Heritage Line) for 6 km. Watch for the signs.

Amenities

Wheelchair-accessible washrooms are available in the Visitor Centre and in the Peterborough County Agricultural Heritage Building. Baby change tables are located in the washrooms.

There is a Snack Booth on-site where refreshment and packaged snack items are available for purchase. There is also a picnic shelter located in front of the historic village for visitors who would like to bring their own picnic lunch.

None on-site.

Elmhirst’s Resort in located in Keene, just minutes down the road from Lang Pioneer Village Museum. There are also a number of hotels located just 10 minutes west of the Museum in Peterborough.

Accessibility

Most of the historic village is wheelchair accessible however certain buildings are not due to their age. The Village has created an Accessibility Tour with both videos and photos of the inaccessible buildings. Access the Accessibility Tour on your own cell phone or on a tablet that can be signed out at the Museum Shop. Photo ID is required as security.

Other Information

Friendly, leashed pets are permitted but owners are asked to be responsible and clean up after them.

Tips to make the visit memorable

Dress in comfortable footwear and weather-appropriate clothing. Please remember that the Village is an outdoor museum and set up in a fashion that is typical of a 19th-century settlement.

Bring your questions: The historical interpreters are knowledgeable and willing to answer any question you may have.
