Alberta Launches Regulated Online Gambling Market With 22 Sites

Alberta’s regulated online iGaming market is now operating, with 22 registered sites available to players beginning Monday.

The province says the new system is intended to give Albertans a legal alternative to unregulated gambling websites, which previously accounted for an estimated 70 per cent of online gambling activity.

Under the new rules, operators must provide tools that help players manage their gambling. These include financial and time limits, gaming activity statements and a provincewide self-exclusion program covering regulated online platforms, casinos and racing entertainment centres.

Companies must also respond when players show signs of high-risk gambling behaviour. Advertising cannot target minors or vulnerable people.

Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction Minister Dale Nally said the government’s priority is protecting Albertans, particularly young people, while creating a more responsible environment for those who choose to gamble online.

The Alberta iGaming Corporation will conduct and manage the market on behalf of the province. Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis will oversee regulation and enforce compliance.

Dan Keene, CEO of the Alberta iGaming Corporation, said the framework sets clear expectations for operators and places player protection and responsible gaming at the centre of the system.

Operators that fail to follow the rules, or take advantage of Albertans, could lose permission to operate in the province.

Revenue from the market will also support public initiatives. Two per cent of gross gaming revenue will go toward First Nations initiatives, while one per cent will fund social responsibility programs, including gambling education, research and treatment
