Albertans will be able to book certain diagnostic imaging tests without a doctor’s referral beginning July 31, 2026, under a new provincial preventative health testing program.
Adults can arrange and pay for an MRI, CT scan, ultrasound or X-ray through participating accredited private clinics. Parents or guardians may also arrange testing for children under 18.
The province says the option is meant to complement the public system, not replace it. Tests ordered by physicians or nurse practitioners for medical reasons will remain publicly funded and prioritized according to clinical need.
Patients must pay the full cost upfront. Reimbursement is available only when the test leads to a new cancer diagnosis. Applicants must have Alberta Health Care Insurance Plan coverage, use an accredited clinic and submit a claim within 365 days of diagnosis. Payment will be based on established public reimbursement rates and will come after any other insurance coverage.
If cancer is detected or suspected, the patient will be referred for publicly funded follow-up care, including through Cancer Care Alberta when appropriate. Results will also be added to electronic health records and made available through MyHealth Alberta.
“Better health care starts with prevention,” Premier Danielle Smith said, adding that the province wants to expand access to earlier screening while maintaining publicly funded care.
Cancer is Alberta’s leading cause of death, and the government says one in two Albertans will develop the disease during their lifetime.
The province is also allocating $5.5 million for cancer screening, $280 million for diagnostic imaging and cancer-care upgrades, and another $223 million over three years for oncologists, surgeries, renovations and supportive care. Participating clinics are expected to introduce services gradually in the weeks following the launch.
