Alberta drivers will soon have a new option for their vehicles. Starting November 9, the province’s new official licence plate, featuring Moraine Lake and the words “Strong and Free,” will be available at registry agents across Alberta.

The new design replaces the look introduced in 1984, although motorists who prefer their existing plates can continue using them as long as they remain in good condition.
The Moraine Lake design was chosen through a public vote that attracted more than 240,000 votes. The “Strong and Free” theme reflects Alberta’s provincial identity and economic strength, while also referencing the province’s Latin motto and Canada’s national anthem.
How Much Will Alberta’s New Licence Plate Cost?
Drivers who want the new design right away can visit a registry agent starting November 9 and pay a $20 government fee plus a $15 registry agent service charge, bringing the total to $35.
Those willing to wait until their vehicle registration renewal date can get the new plate for a $15 registry agent service charge, in addition to their applicable registration renewal fees.
There is no requirement to switch simply because the province is introducing a new design. Drivers can keep their existing plates unless they are lost, stolen or damaged.
A New Plate Also Means a New Number
One detail drivers should keep in mind is that switching to the Moraine Lake plate also means receiving a new licence plate number. Motorists will be responsible for updating their vehicle insurance information to reflect the change.
The new plates also incorporate reflective technology intended to make them easier for law enforcement to read in low-light conditions. The technology is designed to meet international standards for visibility, legibility and resistance to counterfeiting.
“The wait is over, and Alberta’s new licence plate is officially hitting the road. Albertans chose the iconic Moraine Lake to showcase our Strong and Free spirit,” said Dale Nally, Minister of Service Alberta and Red Tape Reduction.
If you are happy with your current plates, nothing needs to change. But anyone looking to make the switch can do so at a local registry starting November 9.
