The three-day event is open to people aged 18 and older who identify as female and is designed to help participants build practical outdoor skills in a “safe, inclusive environment.”
Participants will take four half-day courses chosen from 28 options. The lineup includes shotgun, rifle and archery, as well as fly fishing, fly tying and towing a boat with a trailer. Other choices cover camping, outdoor cooking, hiking, map and compass use, navigation and orienteering.
The program also gives participants a closer look at the management and conservation of Newfoundland and Labrador’s natural, historical and cultural resources.
Becoming an Outdoors Woman, commonly known as BOW, has been running in Newfoundland and Labrador since 1997. Since then, more than 2,000 women have taken part in nearly 50 events.
BOW is offered in different formats. Traditional workshops usually run over a three-day weekend in the spring or fall, while Beyond BOW sessions are held throughout the year and may focus on more advanced skills or a particular activity. Some Beyond BOW events can also include families.
The fall workshop costs $295, which covers accommodations, meals and all course materials.
Registration is available by emailing salmoniernaturepark@gov.nl.ca or calling 709-229-7888.
The program is supported by the Department of Forestry, Agriculture and Lands, Friends of Salmonier Nature Park, Wildlife Habitat Canada, other provincial organizations, volunteers and local businesses.
