Canada continues to advise against all travel to Iran. Officials point to ongoing nationwide demonstrations, regional tensions, and a high risk of arbitrary detention, including of foreign and dual nationals. Iranian authorities have previously detained individuals to apply political or diplomatic pressure on other governments.

Protests have been taking place across Iran since December 28, 2025, including in Tehran, driven by rising living costs and worsening economic conditions. The unrest has led to clashes with security forces, arrests, casualties, and disruptions to telecommunications, including mobile internet service. Authorities have responded forcefully, and in some cases, participants have reportedly received severe sentences.

While Iranian airspace remains open, many airlines have suspended flights.

The federal government notes that overland exits are available through Armenia and Türkiye, and Canadian passport holders do not require visas to enter either country. However, Canada cannot provide assistance inside Iran, including transportation to borders, and closures or movement restrictions may occur without notice. Dual Canadian-Iranian citizens must exit Iran using an Iranian passport.

The advisory also highlights heightened regional tensions, including the risk of drone or missile strikes, as well as water shortages, power outages, increased surveillance of foreigners, and ongoing threats of terrorism and kidnapping, particularly near border regions.

Canadians are urged to monitor local and international media, follow instructions from local authorities, and register with the Registration of Canadians Abroad service to receive updates.

The situation remains volatile and could escalate with little warning.
