Justin Trudeau on May 6th announced that King Charles III will replace the late Queen Elizabeth II on Canadian coins and the $20 bill.
According to a statement, the Royal Canadian Mint has been tasked with designing and placing an effigy of the new monarch on Canadian circulation coins, with a design for the new effigy to be revealed in the coming months.
Bank of Canada will also replace the late Queen Elizabeth II’s portrait on the $20 banknote with that of His Majesty King Charles III during the next design process.
The Bank of Canada follows a process for designing new bank notes that involves consulting with the Minister of Finance, relevant experts, organizations, and government departments. When designing the new note, the Bank of Canada will seek input from Canadians. The process for updating the $20 bill is expected to take a few years.
Existing coins and $20 notes with the late Queen’s portrait will remain legal tender.
To mark the coronation of King Charles III, the Royal Canadian Mint released four pure gold and silver collector coins, each featuring the Sovereign’s personal monogram, his royal cypher, and a stylized Tudor Crown. Canada Post also unveiled the country’s first definitive stamp featuring King Charles III on May 6th.
The coins include a Limited Edition Proof Silver Dollar, a $5 Fine Silver Coin, a $10 Pure Gold Coin, and a $200 Pure Gold Coin. The coins are designed by Mint engravers and will preserve the memory of this historic occasion.
The reigning monarch has appeared on Canadian bank notes since 1935 and on coins since the Mint started production in 1908.
