Animal Alliance of Canada will be holding a ceremony to commemorate the animal victims of war next to the National War Memorial in Ottawa.
100,000 carrier pigeons and 8 million horses were killed in WWl alone, and 750,000 pets were killed as part of the British Pet Massacre to conserve rations for the war.
This event is part of the Animal Alliance of Canada’s Purple Poppy campaign which started in 2015 in Victoria, B.C.
The ceremony is the first of its kind in Ottawa and is organized by Kimberly Lamontagne of the Animal Protection Party (a federal political party) who said in a statement, “the ceremony is held in recognition of the millions of animal lives lost in war, to condemn their ongoing use in war, and to oppose the act of war internationally.”
The animal Victims of War Ceremony will be held on Sunday, November 6, 2022 at 1:00 pm.
Purple poppies will be available to purchase at the event, or you can order them online from the Animal Alliance of Canada website.
If you are attending the event, you are welcome to wear the Royal Canadian Legion’s Red Poppy as well at the event.
