The Canadian Food Inspection Agency issued a recall for 28 sandwich products sold in Alberta because they may be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes.
The affected products were sold under the Fresh Bites, Fresh & Local and Spyhill brands, along with several sandwiches that do not have a brand. Fresh Bites Inc. is the recalling company.
The Canadian Food Inspection Agency has classified the recall as Class 1. Consumers are being advised not to eat, serve, sell or distribute the affected products. Anyone who has one should throw it out or return it to the place of purchase.
The recall includes 10 Fresh Bites products, among them Turkey & Bacon Sub, Ham & Cheddar Sandwich, Turkey & Monterey Jack Sandwich, Turkey Club Croissant, Ham & Swiss Sandwich, Deli Delight Sub and Ultimate Sub. All best-before dates up to and including 26 SE 19 are affected.
The 175-gram Spyhill Cold Cut & Mozzarella Sub is also recalled for all best-before dates up to and including 26 SE 19.
Ten Fresh & Local products are included, such as Ham & Cheese Sub, Hungryman Sub, Turkey Bacon Sub, Assorted Cold Cut Sub, Italian Sub and Ham & Swiss Croissant. Their affected best-before dates run up to and including 26 SE 20.
Seven unbranded products are also part of the recall, including Brie, Fig & Turkey Naan, Ham & Turkey Croissant, Smoked Turkey Sandwich and Turkey & Bacon Sub. For those products, best-before dates up to and including 26 SE 17 are affected.
There have been no reported illnesses linked to the recall. The company initiated the recall, and the CFIA is conducting a food safety investigation that could lead to additional recalls.
Food contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes may not look or smell spoiled. Symptoms can include nausea, vomiting, persistent fever, muscle aches, severe headache and neck stiffness.
Pregnant women, older adults and people with weakened immune systems face a higher risk of serious illness. Infection during pregnancy can also lead to complications including premature delivery, infection of the newborn or stillbirth.
