Doors Open Peterborough and Kawartha Lakes will once again open the doors to historic landmarks, cultural centres, and hidden gems across the region.

The program is part of Doors Open Ontario, which invites the public to explore the province’s heritage for free. Launched in 2002, the initiative has drawn over 7.3 million visits, highlighting sites that blend historical charm with modern utility.

Doors Open Peterborough returns Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., inviting you to explore the city’s heritage, neighbourhoods and community spaces.
Sites include the historic Auburn Generating Station, the Peterborough & County Military Museum, St. John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Showplace Performance Centre and several city facilities.
You can join guided tours, discover local history, visit normally restricted spaces and learn how Peterborough’s infrastructure, architecture and community landmarks have shaped the city over generations and today:
- Auburn Generating Station
- Address: 908 Water Street, Peterborough
- Feature: Built in 1911, this Edwardian generating station still uses its original turbines.
- City of Peterborough Organics Facility
- Address: 1260 Bensfort Road, Peterborough
- Feature: Food waste from 27,000 green bins becomes compost for nearby farms.

Explore historic civic, cultural and community spaces across Lindsay, Oakwood, Omemee, Bethany, Manilla and Woodville on Sunday. Highlights include City Hall, the Academy Theatre, museums, libraries, churches and walking tours. This year’s theme focuses on civic engagement and the places that helped shape Kawartha Lakes since amalgamation in 2001, alongside local heritage, architecture and community stories.
