Edmonton residents planning to celebrate Diwali with fireworks are being reminded that setting them off without a permit is illegal, with fines reaching up to $10,000.
The City of Edmonton is encouraging families to attend professionally managed displays instead, including a free Diwali and Bandi Chhor Diwas celebration at Mill Woods Park on Sunday, November 8.
The event will feature cultural performances, speeches, food trucks and an evening fireworks display, weather permitting.
Free Diwali Fireworks at Mill Woods Park
The celebration begins at 5 p.m., with fireworks scheduled for 8:30 p.m.
Organized with support from the City, the community gathering offers families a chance to celebrate together without having to arrange their own fireworks.
“Diwali is a celebration of light, joy and community,” said Sunny Kakar, Executive Director and Co-Chair of The Sifarish Network.
Kakar also encouraged residents to consider their neighbours, pets and nearby homes when celebrating.
Edmonton Fireworks Rules: Fines Can Reach $10,000
Edmonton Fire Rescue Services is reminding residents that fireworks cannot be used without a City permit.
Permits are issued only to certified operators who have prepared safety plans specific to their display sites, including measures to control and suppress fires.
Anyone using fireworks without a permit could face fines of up to $10,000, along with potential criminal charges.
“Fireworks can cause serious injuries and fires when not handled by professionals, especially in a city with many wood-framed homes,” said Graeme McAlister, Deputy Chief, Community Safety and Risk, Edmonton Fire Rescue Services.
The City is asking residents to choose permitted displays rather than attempting to organize fireworks at home.
Are Sparklers Allowed in Edmonton?
Families can still use handheld sparklers during their celebrations, provided adults supervise their use.
However, the City warns that sparklers burn at extremely high temperatures and should never be used near dry grass, wooden decks or loose clothing.
After use, sparklers should be thoroughly soaked in water and allowed to cool before being placed in the garbage.
With the Mill Woods Park celebration offering a permitted fireworks display, residents have an opportunity to enjoy the festivities while following Edmonton’s fireworks rules.
