Foul-Mouthed Canada: New Brunswick and Alberta Lead in Online Profanity

A recent analysis by BonusFinder Canada has unveiled intriguing insights into the use of profanity across Canadian provinces and cities based on subreddit discussions.

Surprisingly, New Brunswick tops the chart as the province with the most frequent use of swear words, averaging 7.8 expletives per post, which translates to 248 instances from a sample of under 2,000 posts. The term ‘f*ck’ emerged as the most popular swear word, appearing 380 times.

 

Alberta ranks second with an average of 6.6 swear words per post, totaling 1,097 instances. Here too, ‘fck’ leads the charge, used 1,451 times, followed by ‘sht’, which was used 1,336 times. Ontario and Saskatchewan are tied for third place, each with an average of 5.7 swear words per post, but ‘sh*t’ takes the lead as the favored swear word in these provinces.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, Quebec is noted for its relatively polite language online, with just 0.7 swear words per post.

Nationally, ‘fck’ is the most prevalent curse word, accounting for 20.2% of all swear word usage, tallying nearly 6,400 instances out of 31,652 analyzed. ‘Sht’ follows closely behind, favored in half of the provinces including British Columbia, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, Ontario, and Saskatchewan, and making up 19.0% of total profanity usage. The third most common swear word is ‘a*s’, representing over 10% of all swear words used, with 3,341 mentions.

Per the news release, BonusFinder analyzed the top ‘Hot’ posts from the subreddits of key provinces and cities. Using the URS tool, posts and their full comment trees were scraped, and a profanity lexicon was applied to identify and count 88 different swear words.

BonusFinder.ca says sentiment analysis was conducted to gauge the overall mood of the subreddit discussions, shedding light on the prevalence and acceptance of swear words in Canadian digital communication.
