The Crown corporation has begun preliminary work on a multi year transformation plan aimed at keeping operations financially sustainable while adapting to how Canadians now send and receive mail. Early steps focus on two areas: expanding community mailboxes and overhauling its retail network.

One of the biggest changes involves phasing out door to door delivery for roughly four million remaining addresses. Canada Post says nearly three quarters of addresses already use centralized delivery, and the full conversion is expected to take about five years.

The first wave will roll out in late 2026 and early 2027, covering about 136,000 addresses across 13 communities. That includes 30,000 addresses in Ottawa, 18,000 in Etobicoke, and 19,000 in Moncton and Riverview. Other areas include parts of Quebec, Manitoba, and British Columbia.

Community & Postal Codes (Addresses with postal codes beginning with)

  • Moncton and Riverview, New Brunswick — E1B, E1C, E1E, E1G (19,000 addresses)
  • Sept-Îles, Quebec – G4R, G4S (7,000 addresses)
  • La Prairie and Candiac, Quebec — J5R (6,000 addresses)
  • Ottawa, Ontario — K1B, K1G, K1H, K1J, K1K 30,000 addresses)
  • Etobicoke, Ontario — M9V, M9W (18,000 addresses)
  • Winnipeg, Manitoba — R2P, R2R, R2V, R2W, R2X, R3E, R3H (16,000 addresses)
  • Abbotsford, B.C. — V2S, V2T (11,000 addresses)
  • Mission, B.C. — V2V (6,000 addresses)
  • City of North Vancouver, District of North Vancouver and West Vancouver, B.C. – V7M, V7P, — V7R, V7S, V7T, V7V, V7W (23,000 addresses)

Canada Post says community mailboxes offer secure, round-the-clock access, with more than 80 percent of parcels fitting inside designated compartments. For items that do not fit or require signatures, delivery to the door or pickup options will remain.

At the same time, the corporation is looking at its retail footprint. Visits to post offices are declining, with retail revenue down 30 per cent since 2021. Reviews are now underway to assess which locations are still needed, especially in urban and suburban areas that may have more outlets than demand requires.

Canada Post says it will continue consulting communities and keep customers informed as changes roll out, while maintaining service in rural, remote, and Indigenous areas.
