Consider the Oldman Dam Provincial Recreation Area as a camping, road trip, or day trip destination this summer!

The park’s southwestern location offers up incredibly unique landscapes, including the dam itself.

To get the best dam views, try the Oldman Lookout along Highway AB-785, where it bends south.

Another excellent view is on the opposite side of the reservoir and is best viewed from your car: as you cross the Old Man River, drive over a hill, and get a nice view of the distant Rockies.

If you’re on the west side of the Park, then Lundbreck Falls will be a short dive further west.

If you’re on the east side of the park for your trip, stop by the Heritage Acres Farm Museum with its showcase of Alberta’s farming history and cultures.

On top of all the great sightseeing and camping around the Old Man Dam, there are plenty of recreational opportunities.

Boating is popular here, as you can try all types from canoeing and kayaking to sailing, windsurfing, or powerboating.

Paddlers can choose from hand launches along the three rivers, while powerboaters can launch from North Fork, Island View, or Windy Point.

Looking to camp?

This is one of the few parks in Alberta with open camping from May. The season extends until the end of September.

And at Oldman Dam PRA, you have four campgrounds from which to choose:

Cottonwood – power or no services

Windy Point – no services

North Fork – no services

Castle View – power, water, and sewer hookup

How much: $21-$45 per night

More Accommodations

There are more private campgrounds around the Oldman Dam where you can park for a weekend, as well as hotels in Pincher Creek.

Plan Your Trip – Oldman Dam Provincial Recreation Area

What: The massive Oldman Dam is a crossing between three Alberta rivers: the Old Man, Crowsnest, and Castle Rivers, all of which flow into the reservoir.

There are several other estuaries throughout as well; between the rivers and the variety of bends in the large lake, the reservoir takes up a lot of space.

Getting there: access via Highway AB-3 from where you can use several entry points: AB-785 north, RR-293, AB-510 at Cowley, or AB-785 south from Head Smashed in Buffalo Jump.
