The Royal Canadian Mint has released two special two-dollar coins to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the opening of the CN Tower. Both coins share the same design, but one will include colour and glow-in-the-dark features, while the other will be a standard version.
The coins were unveiled on the tower’s Main Observation Level and began circulating on March 31.
The coin reflects both history and change. Designed by Canadian illustrator Carl Wiens, it places the CN Tower at the centre of Toronto’s skyline, showing two moments in time. A 1976 outline sits beneath today’s cityscape, while Lake Ontario mirrors the scene. The contrast quietly reflects how much the city has changed since the tower first opened to the public. When exposed to light, the design shifts in the dark, revealing an illuminated skyline. The words “50 YEARS ANS” are also featured prominently.

Along the outer edge, silhouettes trace the city’s growth over five decades, from the skyline at the time of the tower’s opening on June 26, 1976, to what it looks like in 2026.
Only three million coins were produced, including two million colourized versions and one million without colour.

Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne called the CN Tower a global symbol of Canada’s ambition and innovation, noting that the coin allows people to carry a piece of that story.
The tower itself was built in the 1970s to address broadcasting issues caused by Toronto’s growing skyline. More than 1,500 workers completed the structure in two years, reaching a height of 553.33 metres.
