Gondola or Zipline? Wasaga Beach Opens Door to Big Ideas Above the Shoreline

A new idea is taking shape above Wasaga Beach, and it could change how visitors experience one of Ontario’s busiest summer destinations.

Town council, led by Mayor Brian Smith, has approved a Request for Expressions of Interest, inviting companies to propose aerial attractions. Options could include gondolas, ziplines, elevated walkways or observation structures. At this stage, no project, operator or location has been selected.

The process is still in its early phase. The town is not committing to building anything yet, but is instead gathering ideas and exploring what might be possible.

Smith says the aim is to build on what already attracts visitors while encouraging more year-round tourism. Wasaga Beach is a popular destination for day trips from the Greater Toronto Area, and officials are looking for ways to extend that appeal beyond the peak season.

CAO Andrew McNeill described the effort as a way to better understand market interest and feasibility. The information collected will help determine what types of projects could align with the broader Destination Wasaga plan.

That long term plan focuses on improving the waterfront and downtown, with an emphasis on public access, recreation and community spaces. Any aerial attraction would be expected to connect to those areas or other key visitor locations.

Submissions are due by June 4, 2026. Proposals should include details such as company experience, design ideas, estimated costs and technical considerations, including accessibility and environmental factors.

Next steps remain open. The town may move forward with selected proponents, refine the concept further or choose not to proceed. For now, the focus is on exploring possibilities.
