Halifax has seen its share of unusual celebrations, but come September 20, 2025, the city will witness something entirely new: two dogs saying “I do” in front of family, friends, and a few pints of craft beer.
Good Robot Brewing is staging My Big Fat Dog Wedding at its beer garden on North Park Street, complete with a ceremony, reception, and plenty of canine-approved snacks. The guest list? Humans, pups, and anyone curious enough to see who wags their tail down the aisle first.
The bride and groom haven’t been chosen yet. Through an online contest open until September 5, local dog owners can nominate their pets as a couple. After that, it’s up to the public to vote on which furry duo deserves to don the bowtie and veil. The winners will not only exchange vows but also walk away with prizes — and bragging rights as Halifax’s first married mutts.
Co-founder Joshua Counsil says this offbeat spectacle is Good Robot’s way of reviving the pre-pandemic spirit of oddball events, which once included Crop Top Tolerance Day and even puppet shows with Jim Henson’s old crew. “We’re back and dumber than ever,” he joked. “Life is scary and mundane enough. Let’s enjoy some beers, marry some dogs, and get on with it.”
Tickets are $10, which includes a Good Robot drink. Half the ticket price will be donated to Fly With Me Animal Rescue, helping more pups find their own happy endings.
In case the weather doesn’t cooperate, the big day shifts to September 21. Rain or shine, Halifax is about to learn what puppy love really looks like.
