There is a particular kind of suspense in driving into a New Brunswick forest at dusk, headlights beginning to matter and every dark shape at the edge of the trail deserving a second look.

That is the premise behind Mud To Moose Trail Adventures, a new-for-2026 guided ATV operation in Ripples, east of Fredericton. Rather than watching autumn from a highway lookout, visitors ride forest trails, gravel roads, muddy sections and water crossings while keeping watch for New Brunswick’s largest wild resident.
What is the adventure actually like?

Current tours run for about two hours. Beginners receive an orientation and safety briefing before heading into the woods, while guides adjust routes and pace to conditions and rider experience. Helmets are included.
For fall, the most intriguing option is the Night Moose Safari, scheduled from 6 to 8 p.m. The route heads into the Ripples-area forest as daylight fades, slowing around habitat where the operator looks for signs of moose and other wildlife. The final stretch is ridden by headlights. Wildlife sightings remain entirely dependent on the animals.
That uncertainty is actually part of the appeal. Book this because driving an ATV through wet, changing fall forest sounds fun. Treat seeing a moose as the extraordinary bonus.
Why consider going in fall?

Autumn adds another dimension to what would otherwise be primarily an off-road ride. The Fredericton region is between the province’s earlier northern colour change and later southern peak, making the transition from late September into October particularly interesting for a fall trip.
Cooler periods are also when the operator recommends early-morning or evening outings for guests whose priority is wildlife.
Rain does not necessarily cancel the adventure. Tours operate in rain unless conditions become unsafe, and wetter weather can simply mean more mud. Wear long pants, layers and closed-toe or preferably over-the-ankle boots, and bring gloves plus clothes you do not mind getting dirty.
Is it worth building a trip around?

From places within a 2- to 3-hour drive, yes, especially for couples, families with older children and travellers who want something more active than conventional fall sightseeing. First-time ATV riders are accommodated, although drivers must be at least 18 and hold an appropriate driver’s licence. Younger guests may ride as passengers if they can safely use the equipment and meet the operator’s requirements.
Ripples is roughly 35 to 40 km east of Fredericton, with driving time generally around 35 to 45 minutes depending on where you start in the city. The community sits along the Route 10 corridor toward Minto, so this feels more like a quick escape into the backcountry than a separate destination.
From other parts of the country, it is better treated as one memorable component of a New Brunswick fall getaway, rather than the sole reason for the journey. The ATV ride can be one piece of this fall trip. Before or after heading to Ripples, spend time walking or cycling Fredericton’s riverfront trails.
If you have another day, follow part of the River Valley Scenic Drive along the Saint John River. Another option is Kings Landing at Prince William, where there’s always something going on from March to late Fall. For a more active fall-colour outing, Crabbe Mountain’s Fall Festival of Colours in October lets you see the province from a different vantage point.
